"Pokémon Refresh" is a mechanic that allows you to Pet, Groom and Feed your Pokémon to increase their Affection, Enjoyment and Fullness.

Increasing the Affection, Enjoyment and Fullness has beneficial effects in battle for the Pokémon in question.

You can only groom your Pokémon if it gets dirty or inflicted with a status effect in battle. When you finish a battle, you might be given the option to tap Y to use Pokémon Refresh to groom the Pokémon that fought in that battle. What happened during battle determines what kind of grooming you can do.

You use the comb to untangle messed up hair (from using Offensive Moves)

You use the tweezers and cotton swab to get rid of status effects.

You use the hair dryer to dry drops of water from Water and Ice type attacks, and from battling in the rain.

You use the rag to clean off dirt and mud (from muddy attacks, like Sludge Wave, Mud-Slap, Mud Sport)

You use the brush to dust off sand (from moves like Bulldoze, Rototiller and Sand Attack or when battling in a sandstorm)

To increase your Pokémon's Affection, you can feed them Poké Beans which will also increase their Fullness. There are 7 beans of each color available at the start. More beans can be earned by buying drinks at a Café (one time per day) and by collecting them from Isle Abeens in Poké Pelago. There are 3 different kinds of Beans: Plain, Patterned and Rainbow. Rainbow Beans are the most useful for gaining Affection quickly as it only takes three Rainbow Beans to go from zero to five hearts on the Affection rating.

There are three stats in Pokémon Refresh: Affection, Fullness, and Enjoyment. Fullness and Enjoyment limit how much you can do to increse the Pokémon in questions Affection stat, which is the primary stat that matters. At the higher levels of Affection, Pokémon are granted special benefits in battle, which will be touched on below.

All of the three stats, Affection, Fullness and Enjoyment can have a point value from 0 to 255, and the level of the stat that is displayed in the Pokémon Refresh Switch Screen is based on the number of points in that stat. The minimum points required in any stat to achieve level 1 through 5 are the following:

• Lv.1: 1 point
• Lv.2: 50 points
• Lv.3: 100 points
• Lv.4: 150 points
• Lv.5: 255 points

When a Pokémon has high Fullness, they will eat a Poké Bean more slowly than normal. At each level of Affection (barring 1st and midpoint of level 4(200 points)) the Pokémon will show a special animation with hearts and sparkles appearing over their head.

The following actions affect the Pokémon Refresh stats:

• Send Pokémon in to a battle (-25 Enjoyment,-25 Fullness)
• High-five Pokémon (-2 Enjoyment)
• Switching to Pokémon in Refresh (-2 Enjoyment)
• Walk approximately 50 steps (-1 Fullness, -1 Enjoyment, applies to all Pokémon in the party)
• Care for Pokémon using any of the caring tools (+4 Affection, -51 Enjoyment)
• Feed Pokémon a whole Plain Bean (+3 Affection, +100 Fullness)
• Feed Pokémon a whole Patterned Bean (+5 Affection, +100 Fullness)
• Feed Pokémon a whole Rainbow Bean (+125 affection, +100 Fullness)
• Feed Pokémon a flavored malasada (+3-10 Affection (if Pokémon likes the flavor), +255 Fullness)
• Feed Pokémon a Mythic Malasada (+13 Affection, +255 Fullness)
• Pet Pokémon in a normal spot (+2-4 Affection, +40 Enjoyment)
• Pet Pokémon in a favored spot (+2-4 Affection, +30 Enjoyment)
• Pet Pokémon in a favored spot for at least the fourth time in a row (+2-4 Affection, +30-40 Enjoyment)
• Pet Pokémon in a disfavored spot (+20 Enjoyment)

A Pokémon with Affection at higher levels gains certain feats and bonuses in battle:

• Level 2 and higher: Pokémon gains 1.2 times the normal experience from battles
• Level 3 and higher: Pokémon may endure attacks that could otherwise make it faint and survive with 1 HP (including confusion damage)
• Level 4 and higher: Pokémon can sometimes avoid attacks (even when they have 100% accuracy) and shake off status conditions at the end of the turn
• Level 5: Pokémon sometimes has a higher chance of landing critical hits

It is possible to activate enduring and avoiding attacks multiple times per turn.
